You should be comfortable in a Linux terminal: running commands, reading flags, and navigating directories. You should know what a hash function is in the general sense (input goes in, fixed-length output comes out) but you do not need any cryptography background. You do not need a GPU to follow the lessons; the commands work the same on CPU, just slower.
